A properly designed APFC capacitor bank panel typically combines power factor controllers, step contactors or thyristor switching modules, capacitor duty contactors, detuned reactors, discharge resistors, fuses, surge protection devices, and ventilation or forced-cooling systems to maintain capacitor health under continuous industrial duty. In facilities with fast load variation, thyristor-switched steps provide millisecond-level response, while conventional contactor-switched banks remain suitable for stable load profiles and lower cost applications. In high-harmonic environments created by VFDs and soft starters, detuned reactor banks or active harmonic filter coordination may be necessary to avoid resonance and capacitor overstress. Correct sizing, ventilation, protection coordination, and capacitor discharge timing are essential for long service life, safe maintenance, and compliance with the plant’s electrical study package, including load flow, short-circuit, and harmonic analysis.
